- Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (e.g. stage
performance in metal video, dance routine for boy/girl band).
- There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals (either
illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).
- There is a relationship between music and visuals (either
illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).
- The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of
close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur
across their work (a visual style).
- There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within
screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the
female body.
- There is often intertextual reference (to films, tv programmes,
other music videos etc).
I used these 6 points to then analyse some still images of 4 bands.
This shot is taken of Tom Delonge (Guitarist and Singer) as he is
singing the song and performing with the band. The simple close up shows the
artist as he is but allows the audience to see what he is singing. The
background is of fans of the band so it shows that this is not a studio recording.
I thought it could be used for our production because it is effective to show a
band with the fans of the band as it shows the support and provides a good
background for the artists to be in front of.
This shot shows the lead singer Chester Bennington as he is
walking out of a kind of pyramid structure. This shot used good lighting to
provide a background that is effective in the impact wanted by the shot. It
could be used for our production because it shows the impact that lighting has
on a background.
This shot shows a close up of the instrument of one of the band
members. This shot shows a good use of effective lighting and also a good use
of camera angles to provide an effective shot. It could be used for our
production because it shows the effectiveness of many camera angles.
Lostprophets – Rooftops
This shot shows the whole band performing. This shot shows a good
use of long shots to allow you to see a lot of what you are capturing. This
could be sued for our production because it shows how effective a variety of
camera angles allow you to see more of the band/artist you are filming.
